Experiential Learning Center (ELC) projects are selected based on the sponsoring organization's needs and time frame. Project sponsors are selected by the ELC director based on the scope and subject of their project. Sponsors can be large- or small-scale organizations, for-profit or nonprofit organizations, or public or private corporations. We look for organizations who are willing to support a student team and provide the resources needed for a successful project outcome.
A minimum project fee is required for each semester-long project to offset project costs:
If a sponsor is a nonprofit organization, alternative ways of funding may be available. Depending on the value the project team provides, an additional donation to provide scholarships and fund nonprofit ELC projects is strongly encouraged.
Experiential Learning Center (ELC) teams work on projects throughout the 16-week fall and spring semesters. Projects that start in August end in December, and those that start in January end in May.
To be considered for an ELC project, the business issue must be limited in scope, non-mission critical and manageable within the 16-week semester time frame. In addition, a sponsor contact must be readily available to the student team.
If your organization has a business issue that is more time sensitive or not complex enough for an ELC team, we can match you with an independent study, class project or internship.
Experiential Learning Center (ELC) projects require a sponsor fee to cover the cost of faculty stipends, materials, supplies, travel and technology. Most nonprofit organizations are not in the financial position to pay this fee, yet many are in need of business advice to enhance efficiency, reach more clients or donors, refresh and revise strategic planning, etc., to enhance their missions.
The ELC Angels Foundation was established as a means to gather funds from multiple sponsors to cover the sponsor fee for deserving nonprofit organizations. Nonprofit organizations must apply for funding. The preferred organization must be a qualified 501(c)(3) organization in good financial standing. The organization must submit a proposal which articulates the following requirements:
The selection of the recipient(s) will be made under the guidance of Denise Schoenbachler, interim dean of the NIU College of Business.
When sufficient funds are available, an organization will be selected to work with the ELC on a project. The result will not only benefit the nonprofit organization, but also will significantly contribute to the experience and education of the students who are selected for the team.
